To generate a random campaign, I created the "Random Campaign" ruleset, included as a PDF below. It uitizes the the Random Wilderness Terrain (Appendix B of the AD&D Dungeons Masters Guide shown below) which I adapted to the terrain types included in 5th Edition. The 'Coastal' and 'Underdark' terrains are special cases where bodies of water and dungeons exist within the terrain type.
If a dungeon is encounted, the random dungeon generator rules from the 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide are used. If adjacent hexes include 'Coastal', consider it a large connected body of water. Also, since 'Arctic' was not included in the AD&D table, I used the mountain pass condition, as well as any temperature below 0 degrees as defined in 5th Edition, to include the 'Arctic' terrain type.
Using the PDF ruleset as a guide, you can roll dice or use the following Apps to determine each hex attributes.
1. Hex Map is used to explore one hex area at a time. Each hex has a predominant terrain type as well as several other attributes such as date, temperature, weather, inhabitation, dungeon, and encounter. It also tracks short rests and weather changes, and long rests and temperature changes. If an encounter is called for, use the Encounter Calculator App.
2. Encounter Calculator is used to find an appropriate encounter based on the character levels and randomly determining: easy, medium, hard, or deadly. Encounters can be resolved through combat or sometimes through other means as detailed in the PDF ruleset. If treasure is found with an encounter, the Loot Generator App can be used.
3. Loot Generator, uses the rules in the 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide for determining random treasure. Just select the appropriate options and generate a result, which can be copied to the clipboard for pasting into an adventuring journal, for example.
4. Becoming Lost & Foraging can be used at the end of each adventuring day to determine how much food and water can be found, and if the party was lost during the day. This can lead to levels of exhaustion in accordance with 5th Edition rules, and as detailed in the PDF ruleset.
5. Dungeon Draw and Random Dungeon can be used when a dungeon is located on the wilderness map. Using the random dungeon generating rules from Appendix A of the 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide and the PDF ruleset, the Random Dungeon app can be used to determine the features of the dungeon from the 'Starting Area', an open 'Passage', or 'Beyond a Door'. The Dungeon Draw app can be used to map a dungeon and label chambers. It also includes tokens which can be used for combat situations. When a dungeon is discovered, it is recommended to begin with a 'Starting Area' in the center of the map, and then rolling or using the Random Dungeon app for new passageways, chambers, doors, etc. while adding them to the the dungeon map.
